The Refinery Bankside

I’m always on the lookout for new restaurants to visit because I simply LOVE food.

When I came across The Refinery, from their vast menu to their innovative cocktails, wines from around the world AND beers from London’s best breweries – I knew instantly that I had to try it out for myself.

The Refinery, which resides in London’s Bankside, is a retro-chic restaurant and cocktail bar.

On first glance, it offers the perfect balance of an elegant and industrial design. The neutral colour scheme is complimented by subtle touches of colour, giving the interior a modern, trendy ‘edge’.

I visited on a weekday lunchtime, and I walked into a super social, busy, but buoyant atmosphere inside the restaurant/bar. Looking around, I was surrounded by groups of City workers on their lunch break, individuals tapping away at their laptops in quiet corners, and couples enjoying a romantic lunch.
The Refinery offers customers a retreat from the ‘real world’, with a warm and authentic atmosphere; which is enjoyed by a unique mix of clientele.

A quick look at the menu and I knew my diet was going out of the window while at The Refinery; there are so many good food options to choose from! They feature a diverse menu with food dishes from all around the world.
Quick fact – The Refinery have gluten-free dishes on offer and are able to accommodate dietary requirements.

I kick-started my afternoon in the best way – with a cocktail on deck!
The drinks menu is extensive to say the least. It took me a good five minutes to choose what I wanted. Finally, after a recommendation from the very patient waiter, I chose a ‘Tiki Cup’.

The Tiki Cup was served in a metal tumbler, with cute fruit garnish.
It was the perfect blend of coconut flavoured rum, banana liqueur, pineapple, lime and stout. I liked that I was able to taste the alcohol, but it didn’t overpower the fruity taste of the cocktail – thumbs up to the bartender.

Next up were starters – I opted for the prawn lollipop and satay chicken.

I loved the contemporary, wooden makeshift vibes I got from the presentation of the prawn lollipop’s; they truly lived up to their name. I do appreciate when food is presented well, it makes eating it all the more enjoyable.
The prawns were cooked to perfection – succulent and tasty while the batter was light and somewhat crunchy, without being greasy at all. They were served with a sweet chilli and soy sauce which complimented the flavour of the prawns marvellously.

The satay chicken was served in four pieces, each with a generous amount of meat. They were accompanied by a peanut sauce which was tangy and smooth. The satay chicken itself was flavoursome and slightly chargrilled, adding a smoky tang.

For mains, I chose the buttermilk chicken burger with chipotle mayonnaise and the trio of fries.

Now, I’m not a big fan of burgers, but the person sitting next to me ordered the buttermilk chicken burger and it looked so delicious, I couldn’t resist ordering one too. It really did taste as good as it looked. The chicken was tender and the buttermilk batter crisp and tasty, which was enhanced by the spicy kick the chipotle mayonnaise added.

(Trio of fries)

As I couldn’t decide which fries I wanted, the trio of fries suited me down to the ground. They consisted of cowboy (honey, chilli and garlic), roman (parmesan, truffle and rosemary) and sweet potato fries. The cowboy fries were definitely my favourite – I loved the sweet and spicy flavours combined with the slightly sticky texture of the honey (literally licking my fingers thinking about them).

After my starters and main I was well and truly stuffed. I decided to finish with a gingerbread latte to satisfy my sweet tooth.

The latte had a wonderful chocolate biscuit & hazelnut flavour with a rich, smooth finish and a golden crema. This, topped with the warm and comforting gingerbread syrup, was the perfect end to my meal at The Refinery.

All in all, I would recommend The Refinery to anyone looking for somewhere stylish to enjoy drinks, a sit down meal, or bit of both, in a vibrant part of London Town. There is something for everyone at The Refinery, which hosts an unrivalled atmosphere open until the early hours.
